Choose a Cruise for High-Impact Incentives: Here’s Why

New research from The Incentive Research Foundation (IRF), 2024 Attendee Preference for Incentive Travel, contains vital information for incentive and corporate event planners. The survey of full-time sales employees eligible for incentive travel awards revealed which program features and destinations boost motivation. We are pleased (but not surprised) that attendees’ interest in cruising as an incentive award continues to grow.

With a focus on unique experiences and reduced out-of-pocket expenses, it’s no wonder that the allure of incentive cruise travel is on the rise. A cruise offers a blend of luxury, adventure, and cultural exploration, making it a unique and impactful incentive. Three-quarters of the new study’s respondents indicated that a cruise experience is desirable regardless of the destination, a 10-percentage-point increase from the 2023 survey. Positive perceptions of cruise ship safety and comfort are also increasing, and 77% of attendees agree that a cruise ship offers all the comforts of a luxury hotel.

A cruise is a unique solution that motivates attendees by delivering the program elements they desire.

Varied Activities & Unique Experiences

Multiple dining options, entertainment, daily activities and fitness facilities are offered onboard the ship.  A variety of shore excursions to suit all interests are available in ports of call. Unique experiences abound—ropes courses on ships, zip lines at cruise lines’ private islands, and water sports and snorkeling in clear blue waters.

Luxury Accommodations

Most ships offer accommodations with luxury bedding, oceanview and balcony staterooms, and spacious suites with deluxe amenities, ensuring your attendees feel pampered and comfortable throughout their journey.

Less Out-Of-Pocket Costs

An incentive cruise program includes complimentary meals, entertainment, and most sports and activities, so attendees have fewer expenses. Planners will also a>.ppreciate the complimentary meeting and group event space and AV use (minimal tech service fees may apply)

Opportunity To Experience A Unique Culture

Why just experience one destination? Cruises offer in-depth destination exploration and unique cultural experiences in multiple ports of call.

Multi-Generational Appeal

While group incentive travel appeals to everyone, IRF reports that younger generations, specifically those belonging to Gen Z (born between 1981 and 1996) and Millennials (born between 1997 and 2012), find even greater motivation. A cruise ship is an ideal venue, offering a variety of dining venues, entertainment, sports, and activities onboard and ashore designed for all ages.

Destination Preferences: Beaches & Adventure Travel Top the List

Beach and sunshine destinations remain the top-rated, followed by adventure travel. An incentive cruise can offer either or both of these choices. Ships of all sizes sail from 3 to 7+ nights to beaches worldwide, from the tropical Caribbean to the sunny Mediterranean, providing diverse options to cater to your attendees’ varied interests.

Cruising can also be an entrée to the world of adventure. Small ocean, river, and expedition ships sail into the heart of remote and pristine places without sacrificing luxury.
