When Hurricane Ida made landfall in Louisiana on August 30, the effects were devastating. With sustained winds of 150 miles per hour, the Category 4 storm shattered Louisiana’s power grid, leaving more than one million homes and businesses in Louisiana and Mississippi — including all of New Orleans — without electricity.
As utility crews scrambled to restore power in the hardest-hit areas, workforce accommodations were scarce. A Louisiana energy provider reached out for help in finding an accommodation ship to house more than 1,500 emergency relief workers.
Teamwork & Rapid Response Are Crucial to Recovery
Within 24 hours, working alongside our strategic partner HelmsBriscoe, Landry & Kling/HB Cruise Associates had sourced and begun the contract process with the Bahamas Paradise Grand Classica cruise ship for a long-term charter. Just one week after the furious storm caused catastrophic damage to the power grid, the ship sailed from Palm Beach, Florida to New Orleans with a fully vaccinated crew to house workers and deliver relief supplies to the hardest-hit areas.
Loaded with provisions and supplies and with strict COVID protocols in place, the “floating hotel” will accommodate at least 1,500 front-line workers as they work to rebuild the power and communications grid in the region.
Along with comfortable sleeping rooms, the ship also provides food and beverage services. Grand Classica has full power, air conditioning, and a highly trained staff to accommodate the work crew, technicians, and engineers.
