The WOD on the Waves (Workout of the Day) cruise was the first ship charter designed to bring together CrossFit athletes and enthusiasts. It was also the first event for our client. So stakes were high to deliver the ultimate fitness cruise!
We carefully considered our client’s RFP.
They indicated they needed a ship to accommodate 2,800 persons for a short cruise to a warm-weather destination. But this was no ordinary cruise!
Based upon the extraordinary number of scheduled classes and workout sessions, plus requirements for top-of-line fitness equipment and sponsor branding, we recommended a ship charter of Royal Caribbean’s Mariner of the Seas.
The action-packed maiden voyage set sail from Miami January 21, 2019, for a 4-night cruise to the Bahamas. As the group of CrossFit enthusiasts and athletes gathered on deck for the sailaway celebration, the excitement and energy were palpable!
Charter Customization Creates a Unique Experience
Because there were no other passengers on board during the ship charter, our client had complete freedom to brand the ship and customize the entire cruise experience.
Signage reinforced brand loyalty for the program’s corporate sponsors that included Reebok, NormaTec, and FitAid.
Did we mention the fitness equipment? Landry & Kling helped coordinate shipping and loading of 225 pieces of fitness/cardio equipment. Hundreds of weights and kettlebells were also brought on to Mariner of the Seas.
The WOD ship charter offered CrossFit fans a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to train with the best athletes and coaches in the world.
The four days and four nights of the cruise were packed with over 100 classes and seminars led by health & wellness experts.
In addition, there were workouts with some of the world’s top CrossFit star athletes. The community of workout warriors was also treated to a meet & greet dinner with their favorite athletes.
Nightly theme parties were a hit! They ranged from an epic 80s dance off to a Neptune Toga Party.
Flexibility and Creative Solutions Are Key to Success
The WOD Cruise itinerary featured a call at CocoCay, Royal Caribbean’s private island. The beach day agenda also included a 5K run. However, the cruise line was forced to make a last-minute itinerary change due to unexpected rough seas.
The L&K onsite team worked with the WOD Cruise organizers and cruise ship staff to come up with a creative solution. The Froning Fireball 10K did not disappoint! (Rich Froning, the four-time individual winner of The Reebok CrossFit Games, was a featured star athlete onboard.)
Fitness enthusiasts were encouraged to form teams of four and divide up the work required to reach 1,000 burpees, 500 calories on an echo bike or ski erg, or 10,000 meters of rowing. The event was a hit with athletes and spectators alike!
Mariner of the Seas – An Amplified Cruise Experience
Along with classes, seminars, and training sessions, WOD cruise charter participants took advantage of Mariner of the Seas’ ship amenities. The resort-style ship offered a vast variety onboard activities, state-of-the-art spa and fitness center, and 12 dining options.
After a day of workouts, the CrossFit cruisers were ready to live up to their motto of “train hard/party hard”. They found an exciting nightlife scene in the ship’s multiple bars, lounges, and entertainment venues.
Mariner of the Seas recently completed an extensive $120 million amplification that added new venues and experiences. These included a new tiki-chic Bamboo Room, virtual reality bungee trampoline, an escape room, and glow-in-the-dark laser tag. The WOD on the Waves group loved every bit of it!
The WOD Cruise Charter Was a Success!
The positive feedback from guests, athletes, and sponsors was overwhelming. So much so that our client signed a 3-year contract with Landry & Kling for more cruise ship charters in the future. We are currently working on dates and rates for 2020!
