What makes a cruise ship “revolutionary? Celebrity Edge is the first ship designed using today’s most advanced 3-D technology and virtual reality. Everything about cruising has been reengineered!
An “Edgy” Video Reveals Cutting-Edge Ship Design
Watch as the tender-launch platform at deck 2 becomes a “Magic Carpet”, transporting you to a very hip bar-restaurant on deck 16 where you can have ”Dinner on the Edge”. Your stateroom now has a homey rocking chair. And how about that “Infinite Veranda”? Celebrity’s design ambassador Nate Berkus takes you on a jaw-dropping 8-minute tour of Celebrity Edge – we promise it’s unlike anything you’ve ever seen…on land or sea!
The Celebrity Edge Reveal
Details of the 2,900-passenger Celebrity Edge were revealed at a press event at Celebrity’s Innovation Lab at PortMiami. Just as Celebrity’s new ship is pushing cruise ship design “to the edge”, the press event was anything but ordinary. Landry & Kling co-founders Joyce Landry & Jo Kling were there to see the full-size mockup versions of different venues and accommodations, plus virtual reality views of the ship.
According to Celebrity President and CEO Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, who accompanied Jo & Joyce on the virtual tour, Norwegian Edge was designed to be outward facing to “bring the outside in and the inside out.” Here’s how:
How Celebrity Edge Will Transform the Cruise Experience
The Magic Carpet
This multi-purpose movable lounge-like platform will be cantilevered from the side of the ship. Roughly the size of a tennis court, it will serve as a tender embarkation area where cruisers can wait in comfort to be whisked ashore on sleek Edge Launches. The Magic Carpet rises from sea level up to Deck 16 for a “Dinner on the Edge” – a most unique experience for up to 90 people. On Deck 5, it provides alfresco seating for the restaurants, while alongside Deck 14, the Magic Carpet becomes an extension of the Resort Deck.
The Resort Deck
This is not your typical cruise ship pool deck! The Celebrity Edge Resort Deck includes an outward-facing asymmetrical pool deck with oversized art installations, two “martini glass” Jacuzzis that overlook the deck below, chaise lounges facing toward the sea, and 6 private cabanas (available for daily rental) with soaring ceilings that overlook the ocean. (Pictured right: We visited a full-scale mockup of the 2-story cabana.)
This “urban landscape” area is filled with live, lush greenery and sophisticated artificial tree sculptures. At night, the space will transform for Celebrity’s “A Taste of Film” culinary-entertainment experience featuring live music and movie/meal pairings.
Infinite Veranda Staterooms
The Infinite Veranda blends indoors and outdoors and is unlike any other accommodation at sea. Bi-fold doors can be opened completely to make your balcony part of your stateroom, adding about 23 percent more space. The balcony features a button-controlled window that rises up to close off the space. There are 918 of Edge Infinity Veranda staterooms, including 16 for solo travelers (the first cruise ship to offer single staterooms with verandas).
A pair of Iconic Suites, positioned above the bridge, are the most luxurious new accommodations on Celebrity Edge. These sprawl over nearly 2,600 square feet with two bedrooms and two baths, panoramic windows and a 700-square-foot veranda with 270-degree views.
The 6 new, split-level Edge Villas will offer stunning views from two stories of windows, feature private plunge pools, and have direct walk-out access to The Retreat Sundeck, an exclusive area for suite guests.
The 146 Sky Suites have beds that face the balcony (another first), and each has a rocking chair with plenty of fluffy pillows.
This new, exclusive suites area will feature a private pool, chic indoor and outdoor lounges, and the private restaurant Luminae.
Celebrity Edge Itinerary
December 2018, Celebrity Edge will begin alternate weekly cruises to the eastern and western Caribbean from Fort Lauderdale. The eastern route includes San Juan, Tortola and St. Maarten; while the western itinerary offers Key West, Costa Maya, Cozumel and Grand Cayman.
